Study Abroad Application

Learn more about the application process, eligibility and resources available to help you submit your strongest study abroad application possible. Competitive applicants are those who can demonstrate a strong alignment between their programs of interest and their academics.

Application & Eligibility

Course Planning & Earning Credit

Most students will need to identify their program preferences using the Course Planning Workbook before they can begin an application, as this is how they determine which programs work best for them. The Course Planning Workbook will help you see how each program would meet your academic, professional, and personal goals for a study abroad experience.

SCU-Approved Programs

Fall, winter, and spring study abroad programs are competitive, meaning that not every eligible student who submits an application will be nominated. Summer study or intern abroad programs are not competitive. As long as a student is eligible and submits an application by the deadline, they will be nominated by SCU to participate.

Affording Study Abroad

Prior to starting an application, students should be sure they understand the costs of study abroad at SCU. After confirming their participation in a study abroad program, students will be liable for withdrawal fees if they later decide not to participate. This page will help you understand the costs, submit a financial aid estimate to learn how your current financial aid package will transfer to study abroad, and search for scholarships.

Travel Documents

All students need a valid passport to travel internationally. Passports are not required for domestic travel. If your passport will expire sooner than 6 months after the end of your program, you will need to renew your passport. Please be aware that you may also need to apply for a visa, depending on the program location you are nominated to.

Housing While Abroad

Housing While Abroad

SCU requires study abroad students to reside in housing provided by program providers and host institutions as detailed in the housing section of program brochure for each program, unless specified otherwise. Connect with SCU Housing as soon as possible if you are nominated to study abroad and wish to secure on-campus housing when you return. If you anticipate that you will reside in off-campus housing, be sure that your future lease agreement would allow for a sublet & start collaborating with your roommates or friends to see who might be interested to fill your lease.
